How this works

GPA is calculated as a credit-weighted average: each course's letter grade is converted to a point value on the standard 4.0 scale, multiplied by that course's credit hours, then all of those are summed and divided by the total credit hours. A 4-credit A counts more toward your overall GPA than a 1-credit A, which is why credit hours matter as much as the grades themselves.

The 4.0 scale used here (A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, and so on) is the most common US convention, though some schools use slightly different scales or don't include plus/minus distinctions at all — check your institution's specific grading policy if you need an official calculation.
